Businesswomen to talk of growth
The Leesburg Area Chamber of Commerce and the Lake County Department of Economic Growth and Redevelopment will present a women's symposium Tuesday from 11:30 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. at the Lake-Sumter Community College's Magnolia Room, 9501 U.S. Highway 441, Leesburg.
"As Lake County diligently works to strengthen its economy, we want to provide assistance to the small-business community in this endeavor," said Dottie Keedy, director of the Lake County Department of Economic Growth and Redevelopment. "For Lake County to solidify its status as an emerging business center in Central Florida, it's going to be a communitywide cooperative effort."
Dr. Ramah Wagner, chiropractor and recipient of the 2007-08 Women of Achievement Award from the Business/Professional Women's Club, will host the event. The scheduled speakers for the symposium include:
*Donna King, president of The Custom Contracting Corp.: "Overcoming obstacles to grow, maintain and protect your business."
*Lisa Sommerville, president of Restor Telecom Inc.: "Women in Business."
*Shirley Walker, president of Minority/Women Business Enterprise Alliance Inc.: "The Alliance: Your Regional Small Business Resource."

Fire station open house
An open house for the new Lake Jem Fire Station is set for 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Monday at 16345 County Road 448, Tavares.
The 7,697-square-foot facility was designed to support multiple emergency functions. Tours will be conducted.
Scholarship funds raised
A recent fundraising talent show raised $500 for the Community Foundation of South Lake County Student Scholarship Fund, along with an additional $500 from the South Lake Little League.
As part of a recent grand-opening celebration, Pollo Tropical in Clermont donated ten percent of the store's sales to the scholarship fund.
Garden of the month
The Lakes and Hills Garden Club's Founders Circle of Mount Dora has selected Janice and Charles Gruber, 2402 Wyngate Court, Country Club of Mount Dora, as this month's winner of the Garden of the Month award.
The landscaping faces the golf course, accented with hanging baskets in a glassed-in gazebo, a lanai adorned with geraniums and caladium bulbs and stonework as garden accents in several areas.
Club events, meetings
*The National Society of the United States Daughters of 1812, Land of Lakes Chapter, will celebrate its fifth anniversary at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Leesburg Public Library, 100 E. Main St. Details: 352-787-5969.
*Supporters of Barack Obama will serve hot dogs, hamburgers and all the fixings at a cookout rally at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Oxford Community Center, 4027 County Road 106, Oxford.
Cost is $10 for food. Interested Democrats and independents are invited. Details: 352-259-4163.
*Preceptor Theta Rho will have a dinner meeting at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the home of Carolyn Christenbury. For directions, call 352-315-0880.
*The Golden Triangle Republican Women's Network will meet at 11:30 a.m. Monday at the Lakeside Inn, Alexander Street, Mount Dora. Reservations: 352-383-2304.
Elaine Renick, county commissioner, will talk about the governmental structure of the St. Johns River Water Management District and how water is distributed to the district. She will also talk about the district's proposal of drawing water from the river and other Florida rivers and lakes as an alternative method of increasing the availability of water.
Renick will also report on the status of the request from the Niagara Bottling Co. to withdraw water.
