I’m a St. Lucie County resident and I’m tired of reading negative letters and articles about Florida Power and Light’s proposed wind energy project in St. Lucie County.
A vocal minority along Indian River Drive doesn’t want to look at six wind turbines across the water even though their view already contains the nuclear power plant, transmission lines and a wall of condos on Hutchinson Island.
Like art, it is a matter of personal taste, so if someone doesn’t like the way they look, you aren’t going to change their minds. But many of us are not bothered by them at all and actually think they’re attractive.
In addition to all the obvious environmental benefits, wind energy can power our economy without causing pollution, generating hazardous waste or depleting natural resources. Wind is free “fuel,” infinite in supply and immune to inflation and price volatility.
St. Lucie County commissioners showed real courage and innovation when they approved the geoplasma plant — the first of its kind in the country. Now commissioners need to muster up some political courage and stop being swayed by a bunch of naysayers.
There are a lot of taxpayers and voters who think wind energy is good for St. Lucie and good for America. And we’re even willing to pay a little more to help wean our country off foreign fuel.
Our nation’s dangerous addiction to foreign oil is what fuels our soldiers going off to war. As a Vietnam veteran, I have experienced war. We all need to do our part to help America reduce her dependence on unstable foreign countries for our energy needs. Energy from the wind just makes good sense.
Give the folks at FPL a fair and full review of their project.
