Oregon’s unemployment rate increased slightly during the past month, from 5.5 percent in June to 6 percent in July, the state Employment Department reported Monday.
That means 114,032 Oregonians were unemployed in July, an increase of 13,401 people from a year ago.
According to the agency, Oregon’s seasonally adjusted nonfarm employment fell by 3,600, following a gain of 1,400 in June, the fourth monthly job loss during the past five months.
Statewide, employment stood at 1.73 million, 11,300 lower than the peak reached in February.
Gov. Ted Kulongoski said the employment report showed that Oregonians were vulnerable to the same economic storms that buffeted the rest of the nation.
“Oregon has held steady during the national economic uncertainty of the last several months, but today’s state job statistics serve as a reminder that we are not insulated from national economic trends,” Kulongoski said.
“As today’s numbers show, rising fuel prices, increasing costs of health care, and instability in the housing market are impacting consumer confidence and jobs at both the national and state levels. Oregon families are feeling this crunch.”
In July, three major industries posted substantial job losses: construction ( down 1,200 jobs); manufacturing (down 2,400 jobs); and educational and health services (down 1,100 jobs).
Meanwhile, professional and business services added 2,200 jobs and were the only major industries to post substantial monthly job gains.
Two positive trends in July were within administrative and support services. Employment services added 700 jobs, and services to buildings and dwellings added 800 jobs.
It would be interesting to know how government jobs fared over the same reporting period. I'll bet it's not down.

I wonder if a half of a percent rise in unemployment would be a news issue if Bush wasn't president?

If you believe that it has to do with illegal's and the politians remember, Mr. Obama supports the poor illegal's plight and will work to free them. Also thank our state's long tenured democratic/socialistic tradition. And please put in a good word for Madam Speaker of the house Pelosi.

Yeah, let's not put the blame where it really lies with NAFTA and all the other so-called 'free trade' scams. Let's blame the people who are trying to escape the poverty our government has inflicted on them at the behest of multi-national corporations.

Re: Jobs lost as unemployment hits 6 percent
How many construction workers are out of work due to the illegal hiring of illegal aliens? How many skilled carpenter, masons, etc...
The answer to many of our unemployment issues are living illegally right in front of us.
If you want to fix it, fix the politicians that allow illegals to flaunt our laws.
