Democrats' goals include raising $10 minimum tax, adding more health care

Portland Business Journal

Democrats in the Oregon State House of Representatives on Monday said they hope to eradicate rules that allow some businesses to pay only $10 a year in corporate income tax.

The Democrats, in releasing their goals for the 2009 legislative session, also said they hope to bring more health care to the state's neediest residents. The party announced the goals nearly five months before the next session begins in Salem.

The party's leaders say that raising or reforming the $10 minimum tax would reduce the tax burden on Oregon's working families and small businesses. Any extra money from tax increases could help the state attract new jobs and invest in growing industries, such as those related to the renewable energy sector, party officials said.

The officials added that in seeking to provide more Oregonians with health care, they'll closely study proposed insurance premium increases and invest in such health care delivery modes as school-based clinics.
